The Colors of the Night
The night can be romantic, mystical or frightening but it is always extremely attractive to people. "Yet away I turn myself to the holy, ineffable, mysterious Night", the writer and philosopher Novalis described so the fascination of the night. Poets, writers and, of course, also the painters have always found the inspiration for their works in the night, the stars and the (full) moon. They were inspired both by the strong symbolic power of luminous celestial bodies and by the atmosphere created by the unique lighting conditions. The night was a particularly important theme for the Romantic painters and also it served as a motif for the art of the 19th and 20th century in the works of e.g Paul Klee or Marc Chagall. In particular, it was Vincent van Gogh who depicted the starry sky in the French city of Arles in 1888, that was represented later in his various paintings. In one letter he described the nocturnal scene with such words: "It often seems to me that the night is much more alive and richly colored than the day."
