The Art of Fantastic Realism
In the mid-1940s, when contemporary art was increasingly marked by abstraction, there were young artists at the Vienna Art Academy who diverged from the main trends and concentrated on figurative painting.
The "fantastic realists", including Arik Brauer, Ernst Fuchs, Rudolf Hausner and Anton Lehmden, centered on the Mannerist paintings of Old Masters, allowing dream, nightmare, reality, myths and visions merge in their works under the influence of surrealism. One of the most fascinating personalities of this group and a true all-rounder was Ernst Fuchs who created his oeuvres as a graphic artist, painter, sculptor, designer, set-designer, architect, poet and composer.
Fuchs, who celebrated his 85th birthday on February 13, 2015, began to draw from a very early age and attended the Vienna Academy of Art when he was 15. "Fuchs was actually already a teacher when he was 17", Arik Brauer described his great talent. Fuchs kept up his friendship with many famous painters such as Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Arnulf Rainer and Salvador Dalí, who once said to him: "My only successor!"
