The picturesque location of the village on a hill above the Murnau Moor in the Alpine foothills and the intense colours of brightly painted houses of the village impress the artist. Quite remarkable are the bright, flat and unmixed juxtaposed Colours and a two-dimensional plot of colour.

Gabriele Munter (1877-1962) was a painter of Expressionism. She was a member of the new artists Association Munich, and did not belong to the Blue Rider movement. Gabriele Munter was known also as a life companion of Wassily Kandinsky. She saved part of her works in the war and the post-war period and made them later available to the public along with her artist friend’s pictures of the Blue Rider.
