Ray (1890-1976) was born as Emanuel Radinsky, son of a Jewish tailor who had emigrated from Russia. He began to paint at the age of 5, and at the age of 25 had his first solo exhibition. He founded together with Marcel Duchamp New York Dada movement. In 1921, he went to Paris. As in 1924 the surrealism developed from Dadaism out, Man Ray was also one of its founders and took part in the exhibition of the Surrealists. He was the founder of modern photography, painter and sculptor, turned avant-garde films and created collages, prints, drawings and lyric works. In 1961 he was awarded at the Biennale of Venice the gold medal. The irrational and the incongruent that takes the erotic and potentially scandalous on the grain is characteristic of his work. "The pursuit of freedom and the pursuit of pleasure - it all over my art” he said.
