Sculpture ‘Patron Goddess Isis’ (original size), gold-plated

‘I am everything that was, what is and what will be...’ says the inscription on one of the countless statues of the ‘magic kingdom’ and ‘goddess with 10,000 names’. For the Egyptians she was especially the Mother, the Woman and the goddess of childbirth. She was regarded as the mother of the gods and the patron goddess of the reigning Pharaoh.

This figure was one of the four patron goddesses which guarded the shrine with the innards of mummified Tutankhamun. The goddesses should protect the pharaoh in his afterlife and to ward off the dangers from him. The shrine with the goddesses was discovered in the room adjacent to the burial chamber. Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th dynasty, around 1335 BC.
Original: Egyptian Museum, Cairo, treasure of Tutankhamun.
