Knuth Seim: Sculpture "Sternengucker", Bronze

Astronomy is the beginning of all science, and today as thousands of years ago the man looks at the canopy of heaven with fascination. So also Knuth Seim's "Sternengucker" (Stargazer) - armed with a long telescope, looks at the glittering firmament. Seim displays him in truly dramatic body tension: slightly bent knees to keep his feet firmly and with head tilted backwards he seeks to capture his target.
With the Stargazer, Seim, born in 1961 in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz), returns to his artistic roots. As a skilled stonecutter and a trained sculptor, after studying in Senegal, he works mostly in a simple, reduced formal language, but here he embodies his motif completely figuratively and realistically.
The figure was originally created as a draft for the group of sculptures for the Märkischen Platz in the "City of Optics", Rathenow.

When casting bronze, artist usually applies the lost-wax technique which is dating back more than 5000 years. It's the best, but also the most complex method of producing sculptures.

Ernst Barlach 'The Book Reader' - Lost Wax Casting Technique Part 1

First, the artist forms a model of his sculpture. It is embedded in a liquid silicone rubber composition. Once the material has solidified, the model is cut out. The liquid wax is poured in the negative mould. After cooling down, the wax casting is removed from the mould, provided with sprues and dipped into ceramic mass. The ceramic mass is hardened in a kiln, and the wax flows out (lost mould).

For lower-grade bronze castings, the sand casting method is often used which, however, does not achieve the results of more complex lost wax technique in terms of surface characteristics and quality.
