In the Ottonian time the Hildesheim bronze workshops were famous throughout Europe. In that time the Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim (960-1022), later canonized ordered this candelabrum for his Michaelis Church. The entwined human and animal bodies symbolize the struggle between good and evil.
