Nikolay Anev's interpretation of the themes of classical Greek-Thracian mythology is extremely passionate. Here are the sirens described by Homer in his Odyssey; no man could resist the mesmerizing song of these beings - half girls, half birds - living on a cliff island. He who heard it had to follow it and shattered his boat on the sharp cliffs. Odysseus requested his crew to seal their ears with wax and tie him on the mast, in order to overcome the seduction. Only Orpheus, the Thracian, was able to overcome the siren temptation by his own willpower.


Exclusively at ars mundi: Sculpture "Siren" in fine bronze, cast using the lost wax technique. Hand-patinated, polished and mounted on a diabase base. Limited edition, 199 exemplars, serially numbered and signed. Height, including base, 54 cm.

1950-2009, Sculptor

Nikolay Anev. Born in Sofia in 1950 Nikolay Anev belonged to the most famous sculptors of Bulgaria, where he was already anno 1984 and 1986 national awards for his sculptural oeuvre. He got his nickname „The Thracian “ when he worked as a restaurateur of Thracian treasures in the National University of Cultural Monuments in Sofia before his study in the Academy in St. Petersburg. Nikolay Anev died in 2009.

Bronze casting:

When casting bronze, artist usually applies the lost-wax technique which is dating back more than 5000 years. It's the best, but also the most complex method of producing sculptures.

Ernst Barlach 'The Book Reader' - Lost Wax Casting Technique Part 1

First, the artist forms a model of his sculpture. It is embedded in a liquid silicone rubber composition. Once the material has solidified, the model is cut out. The liquid wax is poured in the negative mould. After cooling down, the wax casting is removed from the mould, provided with sprues and dipped into ceramic mass. The ceramic mass is hardened in a kiln, and the wax flows out (lost mould).

For lower-grade bronze castings, the sand casting method is often used which, however, does not achieve the results of more complex lost wax technique in terms of surface characteristics and quality.
