1935-2018, American Pop Art Artist

He was one of the great painters of American pop art. Born on 24 July 1935 in California Sacramento Mel Ramos is known by his pin-up girls that decorate the famous branded items.

The pop art artist studied art at the Sacramento College. In the 1960s, Ramos first began producing series of pictures whose motifs borrow comics subjects and stand out for their brigh style.

From 1965 he created the works that have become his trademark: he combines naked beauties from American magazines with popular objects of the every-day lif. He developed his own iconography, in which the over-emphasized nudes, distinguish frm transformed background.

"I make sure my pictures are not too erotic and that they always have a touch of humor. Either you understand what is meant or not. " At times his works became viewed as the epitome and the bad taste and he was accused of sexism. From 1966-1997 Mel Ramos worked as a professor of painting California State University, Hayward.

Today, Mel Ramos stands in one line with Warhol, Lichtenstein and Wesselmann. His works have already been presented in numerous exhibitions and are to be found in the most important collections of modern art.

In Germany his works are part of well-known museums and collections. "Mel Ramos, like Phoenix rises from the ashes. Fault has risen and is in great demand. " says the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung 2011. Ramos' works are collected worldwide and are steadily increasing in value.

The artist died in October 2018.
