Karl Gerstner, was born in 1930 in Basel, is the leading graphic designer of Switzerland. After studying at the general trade school in Basel he founded with Markus Kutter in 1959 the advertising agency Gerstner + Kutter. Gerstner designed, inter alia, the visual appearance of the magazines "Capital" and "Impulse".

It created graphic works that have been approved for 1964 and 1968 documenta III and IV. Gerstner's pictures have something floating, they do not define themselves; they are - even by the flow of colours - as a sign of the ambiguity which man can grope hesitantly. Structure to the growth patterns that are of organic nature were based, on subjects of his paintings, which reveal not only a form of game, but the viewer reveal the essence and the laws of nature.

The field of graphic arts, that includes artistic representations, which are reproduced by various printing techniques.

Printmaking techniques include woodcuts, copperplate engraving, etching, lithography, serigraphy.
