Ostrogoth eagle belt buckle, gold-plated bronze

The mass migration brought about new fashion and jewelry forms in the region between Rhine and Danube. And thus, in the tombs of Bavarians and neighboring tribes, there were Gothic flat brooches with stone ornaments of Pontic origin, Langobardic chip-carving decorations, disk amulets attached to the belt by long straps, S-shaped fibulae, keeping the underwear in the neck area and early Christian symbols.

This fibula from the grave of a lady is one of the most significant findings from the migration times. The eagle made by the Gothic-Byzantine goldsmith tradition with polychrome cells was both a piece of jewelry and a sign of dignity. Bronze, gold-plated, with enamel. Original in Germanischen Nationalmuseum Nürnberg. Format 5.3 x 11.4 x 1.7 cm.
