Manfred Kielnhofer: Figure "Mini Guardians" (2012), gold-lacquered version

The Austrian painter, sculptor and photographer Manfred Kielnhofer drew since 2006 attention to him with his "Guardians" project, in various places. He displayed for some time, five life-size perfectly illuminated guardian figures evoking a little some medieval monks in museums and exhibitions and also in crowded public places. There, following an ancient, mystical mindset, they are guarding over the history and the course of the world, letting the viewer to know this: everyone has a certain degree of (co-)responsibility for the events of their times and that all our deeds will be seen and evaluated by these "guardians".

These "Mini Guardians" are from 2012 and take the concept of guardian figures in the form of miniaturized multiples. Gold-lacquered plastic. Weatherproof. Limited edition, 500 exemplars, serially numbered and signed. Format 35 x 52 x 32 cm (W/H/D).

Designation for an art object (sculpture, installation), which is produced according to the will of the artist in multiple copies in a limited and numbered edition.

Artist's multiple contributed to "democratization" of art as the work was made available and affordable for a wider audience.

A plastic work of sculptural art made of wood, stone, ivory, bronze or other metals.

While sculptures from wood, ivory or stone are made directly from the block of material, for bronze casting a working model is prepared at first. Usually it is made of clay or other easily shaped materials.

The prime time of sculpture after the Roman antiquity was the Renaissance. Impressionism gave a new impulse to the sculptural arts. Also the contemporary artists, such as Jorg Immendorf, Andora, and Markus Lupertz enriched the sculpture with outstanding works.
