Memorial and friendship statement: The "Floating"
One of the most famous works of Ernst Barlach, the "Floating", was created as memorial for the victims of the first world war and was placed as such between 1927 and 1937 in a niche of Güstrower Dome. It is also in a double way, a friendship statement: as a whole (catalogue no. 425) and as detail cast "Head of Güstrower Memorial" (catalogue no. 426).
The fact that the whole sculpture still exists is due to Barlach´s friends. They commissioned, shortly after artist´s death in 1938, another cast after the available work model and hid it after, in 1937, "The Floating" had been classified by NS authorities as "degenerate", removed from the dome and, finally, melted down. Today, it is placed in the Antoniterkirche in Köln and could be used in its turn for producing another casting. Thus, Barlach´s masterpiece returned in 1953 to the Güstrower Dome, reminding us since then on the victims of 1914-1918 and of 1939-45, the years being engraved beneath, in stone.
The "Head of the Güstrower Memorial", Barlach´s detail casting of 1930, is a document of direct friendship between artists. Its face traits are clearly - although "unintentionally", as Barlach claimed later - those of his friend artist Käthe Kollwitz. Her works were also proscribed in National Socialist Germany. In 1936, her works were removed from the Academy Exhibition in Berlin. She was no longer present as an artist. Therefore, the "Head of Güstrower Memorial" is acting in hindsight and as foreboding of fate solidarity: it is a portrait of an artist revered by Barlach with friendship and she was soon going to pass through difficult times.
