Guenther Uecker, born in 1930 in Wendorf/Mecklenburg, is a German painter and object artist of international importance. Most of his fame he received for his relief-like nail pictures.

In 1957 Uecker created his nail pictures on a white background, which from then on to became characteristic of his art. He arranged the nails in symmetrical formations on boards. The nail reliefs achieve a dynamic effect by the directional arrangement of the nails and the interplay of light and shadow. Through the white background, the nails cause a dematerializing effect.

From 1976 to 1995 Uecker was working as a professor at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf. In 1999, he designed the prayer room in the new Reichstag building in Berlin. Major awards and exhibitions in major museums and collections around the world, such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, honor his work. The Art Collection in Nordrhein-Westfalen organized a large exhibition for the legendary artist group ZERO in 2015, which focused on the various facets of Uecker's extensive work.

Prizes and awards: first prize of the 4th San Marino Biennale for Zero and Group N (1963), Prize of the Young Biennial in Paris (1964), Sponsor of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (1964), Critic Prize of the Biennale São Paulo (1971), Imperial Ring of the City of Goslar (1983), Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany (1985), member of the Order Pour le mérite (2000).

His complete oeuvre includes not only object art, but also painting, installations, stage sets and films.
