In January of 1937, the reign of the Spanish Republic asked Salvador Dali, who lived for three decades in Paris for that moment to create an order for the Spanish Pavillion for the World Exhibition that ran that year in Paris. Half of a year before the Spanish Civil War broke out. After a couple of preliminary studies, Picasso finally set to work in May.
Inbetween something important happened. On May 30, 1937, the German warplanes ruined the city of Guernica and killed about 1700 people. Picasso then, chose another approach: his order should be a monumental painting, that showed the horrors of wat in the strong black-white contrasts.
"Guernica," with its 3,49 x 7,77 m is the biggest painting by Picasso is at the same time striking and visionary: the bombing of Guernica made the case known, and today, the painting reminds of the bitter loss of the wars in the 20th century. The work "Guernica" spread the immediate symbolic power and was exhibited in different places until it found its place in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The work of Picasso came to Spain only at the end of Franco’s political regime – since 1981 it’s been kept in Madrid. Picasso himself had never crossed the Spanish border anymore.
