The Swiss painter and sculptor Jean Tinguely became famous for his movable metal sculptures, the "kinetic art". In 1944, he began to design space-consuming machine-like objects and thus became an important pioneer of contemporary art in the 20th century. From the 1960s, Tinguely regularly exhibited worldwide, including three times at documenta and MoMA New York.
