Mack, born in 1931, participated in documenta many times. In 1970, his works represented Germany at the Venice Biennale. The artist is the bearer of the Grand Cross of Merit. His works are represented in well over 100 collections. The renowned art houses throughout the world regularly show his works.
The Mack's exploration of light started from a coincidence. He stepped on a piece of metal foil lying on a carpet. The punch issued a dynamic pattern of light beams,, reflected from the foil. Since that time, Mack has turned light into his medium, experimenting with it in installations, objects, sculptures and on screens. He places legendary light installations in the Sahara, thus pioneering in the Land Art. In his experiments, the artist anticipates what later becomes a means for the successful artists like Olafur Eliasson. He uses reflections and materials such as metal mesh or aluminum with scientific curiosity. "I love color as a medium in which the light is expressed, how nice it is that we live in a colorful world" (Heinz Mack)
The Italian avant-garde artist Lucio Fontana on the work of Heinz Mack in 1964: "The quality of light, being pure continuity, is the enigma that Heinz Mack develops in his work, his intention is to simplify the visible, he reduces it to the essence, concentrating not on its visual form within an aesthetic order, but the unmediated idea, which has the merit of being pure information, is its goal.
