Robert Longo is known for his photo-realistic charcoal drawings, whose motifs show the beauty and horror of the world, breaking waves, explosions, torn sharks.
Longo (born 1953), studied with the sculptor Leonda Finke, then briefly at the Art Academy in Florence, and finally enrolled to Buffalo State College, New York. He early started to experiment with various media. However, drawing, painting, installations, performances, video art and photography do not present his exhaustive artistic range.
In 2005, Robert Longo received the Goslar Kaiserring, one of the world's most important awards for modern art. He is exhibited worldwide and also participated in the documenta as well as the Venice Biennale. His works are u.a. represented in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum and the MOMA, New York, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Center Pompidou, Paris, the Albertina, Vienna and the Tate Gallery, London.
