Piero Dorazio
1927-2005
Piero Dorazio, born in Rome1927, is considered one of the greatest Italian painters of the second half of the 20th century and a prominent pioneer of abstraction. Dorazio belonged to the influential Italian artists' association Movimento per l'arte concreta - Movement for Concrete Art, which, as the name implies, was dedicated to the manifestation of abstract-concrete art to counteract the spread of informal painting.
Dorazio's abstract, non-figurative imagery is expressed in the constant use of pure unmixed primary colors, which he combines with horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines, fields and surfaces that form a constructivist-seeming structure. The artist creates colorful geometric compositions that, despite their strict formalization, are able to create a cheerful mood. The works of Dorazio can be treated as portals to a Mediterranean world and its unique light, which the viewer is able to enter as soon as he has surrendered to the vibrant-flickering mood of the works.
