He puts a human in the middle of all his actions. He intentionally avoids explicit representation of emotions in their faces. He refuses to give real feelings and interpretations. The viewer is encouraged to discover the stories behind the faces that look into nothing.
Wood is the favorite material of the artist. Softwood species such as poplar or wawah allow for precise representation of faces. The material remains clearly visible and even after the processing the coarse wooden structure remains visible under the color layer.
Stephan Balkenhol, born in Fritzlar in 1957, studied at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts. His works were exhibited in major art centers such as New York, Tokyo, London, Madrid, and Berlin.
