Max Ackermann belongs to the artists who laid the foundation for the development of the modern abstract art in Germany.
He studied at the art school in Weimar with Henry van de Velde, then in Dresden and in Munich with Franz von Stuck. In 1912 he went to Stuttgart, where he founded a seminar for "Absolute Painting " at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts student of Adolf Hoelzel. In 1936, his works were considered "degenerate" and he moved to Hornstaad on Lake Constance. After the Second World War his works attained fame.
The land of Baden-Wuerttemberg awarded him a professor title and in 1964 Ackermann was guest of honor of the Villa Massimo in Rome.
