Lucas Cranach der Ältere
Lucas Cranach the Senior (1472-1553) was the great painter of the Reformation period. His extensive works, sustainably influenced the visual world of the German arts and breathed a completely new life into religious and secular themes.
Along with Albrecht Duerer and Hans Holbein, Lucas Cranach was one of the most famous Renaissance painters in Germany. He owed his success to his talent in dealing with different customers of high nobility and clergy. He was awarded the enigmatic snake seal from the Saxon Elector Frederick the Wise that soon became his incomparable trademark.
Cranach developed a unique style. His portraits go beyond a true-to-nature reproduction, they represent, above all, emotions and characters. Through his friendship with Martin Luther, Cranach was significantly involved in the development of a Protestant imagery, but, at the same time, remained faithful to his Roman Catholic clientele.
