Leo Leonhard
Leo Leonhard was born in 1939 in Leipzig.
After studying German in Marburg, Germany, he studied painting and graphics at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf. Leonhard taught for many years as a Professor of drawing and illustration in Mainz. He gained international renown through his numerous book illustrations, which, go far beyond how about his highly vaunted "fist cycle"--a graphic accompanying of the narrative action. Leonhard draws and commented on his illustrations bind the classics to the contemporary. It's no different in the works of his homages cycles that emerged in the last few years (oil painting, but also as a drawing and etching).
Leonhard proves his reverence the great art history with a wink. There's Joseph Beuys, one daliesk on huge stilts that progressive rabbits observed ("Beuys and the Hare"), there's a Hommage à Piero della Francesca, in whose Werk threatens to be glossed over with a big paint roller by a craftsman ("roll over Piero"). And there's the 'patch painters", under whose skilful hands is Caravaggio's" Calling of Saint Matthew" from 1599.
