Bernhard Heisig, born on March 31, 1925, in Breslau, is one of the large and distinctive personalities for the development of art in the GDR - was influential and inconvenient, celebrated and so self-contained that his work today occupies a significant place in the history of art in Germany and the world. He was one of the founding fathers of the Leipzig school, where he taught from 1961-1990.
"The Fury of Pictures" was the exhibition Bernhard Heisig overwritten with the three German museums honouring the artist on his 80th birthday in the year of 2005. The Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Dusseldorf and the National Museums of Berlin showed a life's work that defies simple explanation patterns with this comprehensive overview of his work. An exhibition at the National Gallery in Berlin presented Bernhard Heisig at the level of Kirchner, Heckel and Schmidt-Rottluff. The artist himself confessed to Dix and Beckmann. As this he painted from the same inner motivation: melancholy and grace and an incredible intensity that goes into the visionaries. The artist was known to revise his pictures again and change it. The artist: "It only makes painting fun if you bring out the best out of themselves without hassle, it's no fun.."
in 1986, Heisig portrayed the former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt - for the gallery with portraits of former Federal Chancellor in the Federal Chancellor's Office. Also Heisigs panoramic image "Time and life" is exhibited in the German Bundestag.
2010, the renowned painter was honoured for his life's work with the "art prize of the Prime Minister of Brandenburg". He got "a work created that looks far beyond the day".
Bernhard Heisig died in June 2011 at the age of 86 years.
