Antonio Canova
Antonio Canova, born in Possagno at Bassano in 1757, was known as the greatest sculptor since Michelangelo. Already at the age of 15 he worked for the Italian aristocracy in his own workshop. The success accompanied him all his life, until he died in Venice, in 1822. Canova was famous as one of the most prominent representatives of the Italian classicism across Europe.
The Getty Museum in Malibu, California offered around 10 million euros for Canova’s "Three Graces". But thanks to the persistent intervention of the British government and the generosity of art collectors and patrons like J. Paul Getty and Baron Hans Thyssen-Bornemisza this unique jewel of the European sculpture remained in Great Britain.
