Thomas Schöne: Sculpture ‘Hamlet’, version in artificial marble

Around 400 years ago (in 1602) took place the premiere of ‘Hamlet’, Shakespeare's probably most famous tragedy - the play that has not lost its relevance over time. Against the background of the story of the king’s murder there were sounded out the seemingly unchangeable basic conditions and conflicts of human existence. Until today the various interpretations make this ambiguous piece of Shakespeare a key play of the modern era.
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark: the king, Hamlet's father, is dead, murdered. The prince returns to his mother and meets her at the royal castle newly married to Hamlet's uncle Claudius. The spirit of the dead father appears in front of Hamlet, discloses Claudius as the murderer and demands to take the revenge. When a company of actors appears at the court, Hamlet makes a drama which recreates the murder of his father in order to convict Claudius of a crime.

Sculptor Thomas Schöne proves with his sculpture once again his high sensitivity and his classical mastery of sculpture. The artist captured the Danish prince in the moment of his deepest philosophical debate: ‘To be or not to be - that is the question.’

A plastic work of sculptural art made of wood, stone, ivory, bronze or other metals.

While sculptures from wood, ivory or stone are made directly from the block of material, for bronze casting a working model is prepared at first. Usually it is made of clay or other easily shaped materials.

The prime time of sculpture after the Roman antiquity was the Renaissance. Impressionism gave a new impulse to the sculptural arts. Also the contemporary artists, such as Jorg Immendorf, Andora, and Markus Lupertz enriched the sculpture with outstanding works.
