Alain BonnefoitAlain Bonnefoit, born in Paris in 1937, is a painter, sculptor and illustrator. Many experts consider him the most prominent nude painter of the past century.

Bonnefoit always was interested in painting. Already at 16, he began his studies at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris and continued his education at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and then 1959-60 in Brussels. He specialized in the subjects of engraving and sculpture, continues. On his return to Paris he became a student of the famous sculptor Volti. Fascinated by the beauty of Tuscany, which he discovered for himself in 1963, Bonnefoit started his career as a landscape painter, until in 1964 he found a new form of expression: the female nude. From now on the naked female body was the predominant theme in his art; he shows it in all its beauty and with all its mysteries.

A trip to Japan in 1975 had a deep influence on his artistic development. In the land of sun, he made the acquaintance with Japanese artists, became deeply involved with the Zen way of thinking and learned the Sumie technique. This trip was followed by the other ones, during which he improved his Japanese ink painting technique, which continued to deepen and improve.

In addition to painting and sculpture Alain Bonnefoit has has bacame famous as a book illustrator. Full of enthusiasm, he illustrated books of very different authors, from Voltaire to Pierre Perret. Among the highlights there are the drawings to a collection of chansons Georges Brassens, the artist he admired.

Bonnefoit celebrated his first big success with audience and critics in 1969 at an exhibition at the Gallery Jean Minet in Paris. Nowadays his works are presented at numerous exhibitions in France, Luxembourg, Italy, Belgium, the United States, Switzerland, Japan and also in Tahiti, where his works were exhibited in 1987 and 1990 at the Musée Gauguin.
