HP Zimmer: Picture “November 9th 89”

HP Zimmer (1936-1992) is one of the leading names of contemporary German art next to Jorg Immendorff and Markus Lupertz, whose works reflect the German society and history in a special way. “November 9th 89” is a vision from Zimmer, which he completed at the moment of its fulfillment. The painting was created in the night the Berlin Wall fell. Deeply moved by transmitted at that time dramatic television pictures, HP Zimmer immediately placed his easel next to the TV. And that night he was painting an artistically unique document of German history through tears, hope and fear. Due to its artistic importance and of course its political and historical dimension the “November 9th 89” has been chosen personally by the German Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder for the Federal Chancellery.
