Horst Antes: Picture "Black-white-spotted figure" (1970)

The black-and-white-spotted Figure by Horst Antes is one of a series of six large-scale works, which he created in the years 1970 to 1971 by Matthieu in Dielsdorf near Zurich. These six leaves take a special position in its rich graphical oeuvre. In rare harmony between artist and printer, the lithography introduces antes in all their ways: He revels in the colours and printed the black and white-spotted figure of not less than six stones.

*1936, painter, graphic artist, sculptor, known for his cephalopods.

Horst AntesHorst Antes. The oeuvre of Horst Antes, born in 1936 in Heppenheim, influenced the art of the 20th century greatly. After completing his studies at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe at HAP Grieshaber, he organized significant individual exhibitions e.g. in London, New York and Tokyo.

Antes works as a painter, sculptor and ceramist. He belongs to the New Figuration, which has appeared at the end of the 50s and, as opposed to abstract art, has returned to the figurative form. Antes implores in his colors and symbolism the secrets of sensations, the fateful compulsion to continue the existence. With the invented by him "cephalopod" he declared the deformation and reducibility of civilized man in a clearly ironical way.

At the early age he received the important German and international art awards, including 1961 Young Artist Prize, Recklinghausen. 1962 - Villa Romana Prize. 1963 – Villa Massimo Prize. UNESCO prize for painting at the 33rd Venice Biennale in 1966, Premio Marzotto Europe, Valdagno, 1968. He took part at the documenta III, IV and V. 1965-67 (and 1984-2000) professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe. 1967-68 invited professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts, Berlin. 1991 Art Award of Baden-Wurttemberg, Hessen Culture Award and Grand Prize of the Biennale in San Paolo.

Since 1971, Horst Antes is a free artist in Karlsruhe and Italy. He became popular in Germany, thanks to the sculptures, exhibited in the Federal Garden Show, 1967. Today his paintings and sculptures are exhibited in many major collections and museums in the world, for example, the Guggenheim Museum New York, the City Gallery at Munich, Sprengel Museum in Hannover and the Art Gallery in Hamburg.
